Understanding the Answer Short Question Task

In the Answer Short Question task of the PTE Academic and UKVI test, you will listen to a brief question and must reply with a single word or a few words. Even though you are speaking your answer, this task exclusively evaluates your listening capabilities.

• Skills Assessed: Listening (Speaking and writing skills are not tested here)
• Prompt Length: 3–9 seconds
• Time to Answer: 10 seconds

How to Answer This Question

For this item type, your goal is to reply to the question as concisely as possible. Here is what to expect during the test:

1. Audio Setup: The audio begins to play automatically. In some cases, you may also see an image on the screen to provide context.
2. Watch the Status: When the audio finishes, the microphone opens immediately. The recording status box will show "Recording".
3. Start Speaking Immediately: Unlike other tasks, there is no short tone. Speak into the microphone right away and answer the question with one or a few words.
4. Delivery Style: Speak clearly. Because the answer is so short, there is no need to rush your words.
5. Finish Promptly: Finish speaking before the progress bar reaches the end and the word "Recording" changes to "Completed".
6. Single Attempt: You are not able to replay the audio, and you are only able to record your response once.

Essential Test Tips

1. Do Not Pause for Too Long

Timing is incredibly strict for this task. You must start your answer as soon as the recording status box changes to "Recording".

• The 3-Second Rule (Before Speaking): If you wait for more than three seconds to speak, the recording will stop, the item status will change to "Completed", and you will have lost your chance to give your answer.
• The 3-Second Rule (While Speaking): When you have started talking, don't stop for more than a second or two. If you stop for three seconds whilst speaking, the recording status will change to "Completed" even if you haven't finished, and you won't be able to continue answering.

Note: If the status changes to "Completed", you have to click "Next" to move on to the next item. This 3-second rule also applies to Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, and Retell Lecture.

2. Do Not Try to Give a Long Answer

The instructions for this item explicitly state: "You will hear a question. Please give a simple and short answer. Often just one or two words is enough."

There is absolutely no point in saying more than you need to say. Marks are awarded for a short, accurate answer. You will not receive extra marks for adding additional words or speaking in full, grammatically complete sentences.

Example: If the question is: "What type of periodical is published on a daily basis?"

• Answer A: "newspapers"
• Answer B: "It's newspapers that are published every day."

Both of these answers would score the exact same marks. Save your breath and time—just say "newspapers".

How This Question is Scored

Your response for Answer Short Question is judged entirely on your ability to understand a spoken question and provide a brief, accurate response.

• Correct / Incorrect Scoring: Your response is scored as either correct or incorrect based on how appropriate the words in your response are.
• No Partial Credit: No credit is given for no response or an incorrect response.
• Skill Impact: It is vital to remember that this question type only affects your listening score. Your speaking and writing skills are not tested by this specific item type.
