Understanding the Respond to a Situation Task

In the Respond to a Situation task of the PTE Academic and UKVI test, you will listen to and read a prompt describing an everyday situation. You then need to provide a spoken response describing exactly what you would say in that specific situation.

• Preparation Time: 10 seconds (after the audio finishes)
• Time to Answer: 40 seconds

How to Answer This Question

For this question type, you need to deliver an extended spoken response. Here is the step-by-step process:

1. Audio and Text Setup: The audio recording will play automatically. You can also read the text description (up to 60 words) on the screen.
2. Take Notes: While the audio is playing, you can take notes on the erasable whiteboard provided.
3. Prepare Your Response: After the audio finishes, you have 10 seconds to prepare your response.
4. Watch the Countdown: The recording status box displays a countdown until the microphone opens.
5. Start Speaking Promptly: You will hear a short tone. After the tone, start speaking immediately. Do not start speaking before the microphone opens because your voice will not be recorded.
6. Delivery Style: You should speak clearly. There is no need to rush.
7. Finish Within the Limit: Finish speaking before the progress bar reaches the end and the word "Recording" changes to "Completed".
8. Single Attempt: You can only listen to the audio once, and you can only record your response once.

Essential Test Tips

1. Make Good Use of Preparation Time

You only have 10 seconds to prepare. Use this brief window to examine the prompt and decide what main points you need to convey. Most importantly, use this time to decide whether you need to use a formal or informal register based on who you are supposed to be talking to in the scenario.

2. Make Good Use of the 40 Seconds Speaking Time

Make sure you are able to cover everything required by the prompt within your 40-second time limit. Try to speak for the whole 40 seconds if you can. If you repeat ideas, correct yourself, or hesitate, you will use up valuable time and lose score points. Keep talking and ignore any mistakes that you make to preserve your oral fluency score.

How This Question is Scored

Your score is based on three main factors:

Content

Is your response relevant to the prompt and does it convey prompt information accurately? Content is scored based on whether you deal with the situation effectively and communicate clearly using appropriate expressions. You must respond using the information in the prompt. Do not miss out on any key information or misinterpret the situation (for example, if the situation says you need the slides by Friday but you say by Sunday – this is a misinterpretation). You must also deliver your response using the appropriate formal or informal language depending on the situation and the person you are addressing.

Pronunciation

Does your response show you can produce speech sounds in a similar way to most regular English speakers? Pronunciation is scored by assessing if your speech is easily understandable. The best responses contain vowels and consonants pronounced in a fluent-like way and stress words and phrases correctly. Note: PTE recognizes regional and national varieties of English pronunciation to the degree that they are understandable.

Oral Fluency

Does your response show a smooth, effortless and natural flow of speech? Oral fluency assesses if your rhythm, phrasing, and stress are smooth. The best responses are spoken at a constant and natural rate with appropriate phrasing. Hesitations, repetitions, and false starts will negatively affect your score.

Important Scoring Notes:

• Partial Credit: This question type uses partial credit scoring. No credit is given for no answer or an irrelevant answer.
• Skills Evaluated: Your reading and listening skills are only used to read the instructions and to read and listen to the prompt. Only your speaking is formally assessed.
• AI and Human Evaluation: Content, Pronunciation, and Oral Fluency are all AI-scored traits. However, a human expert will also review Content before your final score for the task is confirmed.
