PTE Time Management Strategies
Practical time allocation strategies for PTE Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections.
Q193. How should I manage time in PTE Reading?
PTE Reading has approximately 23–30 minutes for 15–20 questions. Allocate roughly: Re-order Paragraphs — 2–3 minutes each; Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks — 2 minutes each; Reading Fill in the Blanks — 90 seconds each; Multiple Choice Single Answer — 90 seconds each; Multiple Choice Multiple Answer — 2 minutes each. If you are stuck on a question for over 3 minutes, move on and return if time allows.

If time expires on a task, PTE automatically moves you to the next task. Any unfinished writing task (essay or SWT) will be scored based on what you submitted. It is better to have an unpolished but complete response than a well-crafted but incomplete one. For writing tasks, write a complete structure first, then improve quality in remaining time.

Yes. Each PTE task displays a countdown timer showing how much time remains for that specific question. For the overall section, a progress indicator shows your position within the section. Use the per-question timer actively to pace yourself rather than only checking when time is running low.
